Imagination Yoga aims to improve the ability of approximately 850 second grade students in 34 classrooms throughout the Columbia River Gorge. This program is bringing the practice of yoga to students so they can learn to: calm themselves, focus their attention, develop awareness of kindness for oneself and others and use their imaginations. Students learn these skills in a 10 week series of 45 minute classes that will increase large motor development, including balance, flexibility strength and motor planning. It incorporates the Imagination Yoga Calm Curriculum that is an Oregon based company, conceived in 2007 and becoming one of the premier children’s yoga programs in the United States.
It is the intention of Imagination Yoga to inspire real change in the lives of children through weekly activities that nurture physical, mental and emotional development. This program addresses national concerns for childhood obesity, inactivity and bullying by teaching children concepts and skills including movement, relaxation, concentration, kindness and calm. Children can use these skills at school, at home and in the community with the goal of creating global change.
Imagination Yoga is a sustainable, all-inclusive, school-based program supported by the community that gives children the opportunity to move their bodies in a playful, imaginative way.
We do this through:
A supportive network of school administrators
A robust fundraising plan
The availability of dynamic space
Providing yoga for all children
The support and involvement of our community
